Tragedy strikes Dussehra event, over 50 feared dead as train runs them over

In a major tragedy that struck Choura Bazaar near Amritsar on Dussehra evening, as many as 50 people are feared dead as a train ran over them.

It is said that people were busy watching the burning of Ravan effigy on the occasion of the Dussehra.

It is said that they could not hear the sound of the train approaching due to the crackers’ noise.

It is not clear what is the toll of people so far but it may rise considerably.

It is estimated that around 500-700 people were present at the spot.

The accident took place near the Jodha Phatak area.

It was when they tried to escape the crackers, masses frantically started running on the railway tracks and could not see the approaching trains from either side of the tracks.

Several injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals.
