Two from Chhattisgarh selected for coveted Padma Shri; for years of contribution

Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh and BJP state President Dharam Lal Kaushik have hailed that two of the personalities from Chhattisgarh have received Padma Shri awards.

It need be mentioned that while Damodar Ganesh Bapat of Janjgir-Champa district has been selected for his social works, Bilaspur resident Pt Shyam Lal Chaturvedi would be honoured for his contribution in the field of literature, education and journalism.

It need be mentioned that the two personalities along with many others will be bestowed with the award in President’s House in February or March of this year.

The announcement was made by Union Home Ministry on the eve of Republic Day.

Chief Minister Dr Singh has congratulated both the personalities for their achievement that led to this honour.

It need be mentioned that Damodar Ganesh Bapat has devoted his life to the service of leprosy patients.

He used to serve the patients in village Sothi, eight kilometers from Champa where Bharatiya Kushtha Nivarak Sangh has instituted an Ashram.

It is said that Bapat reached the Ashram in year 1972 and expressed his wish to join in the service.

Again, Bilaspur resident Shyam Lal Chaturvedi has been making contributions in the field of journalism and Chhattisgarhi literature over past seven decades.

Chaturvedi has also had the honour of being first head of the Chhattisgarh Rajbhasha Parishad.
