In a major international development that is set to restart the cold war scenario between the western nations and Russia led coalition, the US-led forces carried out a wave of air strikes against Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime on Saturday.
The air strikes are said to be in response to alleged chemical weapons attacks that President Donald Trump branded the “crimes of a monster.”
US President himself made the announcement in a televised address to the world.
It is said that actions were taken despite Russia’s threat to respond.
Loud explosions were heard in the Syrian capital Damascus.
Syrian state media slammed Western strikes on Saturday as illegal.
The air strikes were carried out in coordination between US, France and United Kingdom.
US, British and French “naval and air assets” took part in the strikes.
Strikes were aimed at “chemical weapons infrastructure” in Syria.>
