US imposes high import tariffs; but apprehensive of retaliation

It was acknowledged that American spice industry depends largely on countries such as India on the import of spices and are now fearing a retaliatory action from them

Amid insistence of United States to bridge the trade deficit with countries like India and China, the US administration is also concerned how these countries might retaliate and how it will impact the trade scenario.

A top US official now is known to have said that India may be in a position where it would want to retaliate.

This comes even as the US continues to unveil high import tariffs on a number of items.

The US Trade Representative (USTR), Robert Lighthizer, told lawmakers during a Congressional hearing that India’s system is not open and has a lot of vulnerabilities.

The US official said that India has a substantial trade surplus with the US.

It was acknowledged that American spice industry depends largely on countries such as India on the import of spices and are now fearing a retaliatory action from them.

The USTR said that the companies ought to draw their attention towards any specific retaliation.
