Will now Afghanistan be included in CPEC ??; heres what China said
Even as there are reports that China Pakistan Economic Corridor itself may have run into trouble, the two countries are now contemplating including Afghanistan into the corridor.
This was confirmed by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday as three sides met.
It need be mentioned that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor or CPEC passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and is part of China’s ambitious Belt and Road plan to link China with Asia, Europe and beyond.
China hopes to position itself as a ‘helpful party’ in talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan as both are uneasy neighbors since long.
Ties between Afghanistan and Pakistan have soured in recent years as Kabul blames Islamabad of supporting and funding Taliban terrorists, who are responsible for repeated attacks in Afghanistan.
Speaking after the first trilateral meeting between the foreign ministers of China, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Minister Wang said China hoped the economic corridor could benefit the whole region and act as an impetus for development.
Minister Wang said that the three countries would reach a gradual consensus, tackling easier, smaller projects first.
India has protested the CPEC project as it runs through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
